The Essence of Crete
Starting from
Heraklion, Greece
From the port of Heraklion
you will drive to the
renowned archaeological site
of Knossos. Your privately
guided tour will take you
through the fantastic ruins
of the ancient palace
complex, which served as the
administrative and religious
center for the whole region.
It was excavated and
restored by Sir Arthur Evans
and the restorations, though
criticized by some for their
modernity, help the tourist
to visualize the palace as
it was and understand its
labyrinthine complexity. The
living quarters of the king,
queen and members of the
royal court, rooms for state
occasions, theatre area,
store rooms and potters'
workshops are all within the
palace complex.
Next you will visit a rustic
village to experience the
true essence of Crete.
Lying in sharp contrast to
the hectic port city of
Heraklion, it is not far
away, but seems centuries
removed in feel and
lifestyle. You'll see wheat
threshing performed by
donkeys using wooden sleds,
honey farming and a Raki
distillery. You'll even pay
a short visit to the local
sheep bell craftsman whose
products provide the
alluring soundtrack of the
rolling hills.
Lunch will be served in the
village taverna situated in
a naturally serene setting.
An explanation of the
methods and recipes will be
offered by your host. A
typical lunch includes meat
balls, village salad, oven
baked pork with potatoes,
zucchini, bread with
tzatziki and seasonal fruit.
It is well known that Greek
cuisine is one of the
healthiest in the world and
this is particularly true in
Crete.
Finally you'll enjoy a short
stop for the ultimate local
Crete experience in a wooden
beamed home of a local
villager. You'll be served
as a guest tasting “Raki”,
an anise flavored liquor,
served with tomatoes and
rusks.
At the end of the tour you
return to the pier in
Heraklion.

walking and includes uneven
surfaces. It is not
wheelchair accessible. The

fees and lunch are per
person and are added to the
